Safety Engineering

Our Safety Engineering leads Process Safety to prevent incidents by managing hazards from the asset management, engineering and construction perspective. We provide specialized engineering services to:

  • Promote the integration of hazard analysis and safety risk management in engineering, design and construction processes,
  • Mentor clients to develop their knowledge of safety engineering and construction concepts based on human factors,
  • Develop risk analysis to support good decision making on issues that may have a broad or significant impact to the clients operations
  • Assess new equipment assets to their impacts towards the safe operation and maintenance

The activities fall into four main areas:

Safety by Design

Safety by Design is a HFG deliverable that focuses on the application of engineering and construction principles and standards for designing facilities and systems that are inherently safe. It proceeds through a systematic analysis of hazards around a system or facility and the barriers that are in place or need to be implemented to reduce the risk posed by these hazards to an acceptable level.

Operations and Work Methods Engineering Support

We support the clients Operations and Work Methods for safety related issues that require engineering expertise, such as

  • Review and update work procedures and purchasing specifications for safety equipment
  • Test, evaluate, and approve tools and equipment
  • Develop specialty work procedures
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the engineering, work method construction, hazard log identification and on incident investigations

Safety Related Risk Analysis

Safety risks posed by existing or proposed new practices, engineering, construction, equipment, or installations may require detailed analysis.  In these instances, we can perform a safety risk assessment and provide recommendations in support of decision making.

Constructability Reviews

A Constructability Review implemented appropriately may result in an improvement in project safety, engineering, overall cost and schedule, improved installation quality and improved risk management during construction. If implemented early on in the Project lifecycle it will produce desirable effects on high profile activities such as Safety, Environmental Assessments, Stakeholder Engagements and reduction of operation system impacts for optimization.

Constructability is defined as the optimum use of construction, work methods and operational knowledge brought forward into the planning, design, scheduling, cost estimating, contracts and procurement phases consistent with the overall project objectives.

Constructability reinforces and is an extension of sound engineering and project management principles and is intended to integrate the constructability review process with the Project and Service Delivery Practices.

One of the main goals of Constructability Review is to increase the involvement of construction personnel, using their knowledge and expertise of construction methodology during all project phases, to improve project outcomes.
